Overview
Nvidia is in talks to provide billions of dollars in credit guarantees for debt tied to an Nscale data center in West Virginia that Anthropic plans to use. Reuters, citing The Information, says no agreement has been signed and terms could change. The proposal would extend the financing risk of AI infrastructure beyond the developer building it.
The guarantee is still being negotiated
Reuters reported on October 29 that Nvidia is discussing credit support for billions of dollars in debt to fund power infrastructure and construction at a West Virginia data center developed by Nscale. Anthropic plans to use the facility. The report also says the deal has not been signed, its terms could change, and the three companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
A large figure and a specific use can make the proposal sound settled. What is confirmed is that talks are under way. If Nvidia eventually provides credit support, that would not mean it is simply paying Nscale’s construction bill. It could mean the chipmaker takes on debt risk if specified conditions are met. The guarantee amount and triggers have not been disclosed.
Compute demand and construction debt are linked
The roles in this chain are different: a developer borrows before a data center is built, an AI company expects to buy or rent compute, and a chip supplier may help the project obtain financing. Nvidia is both an investor in Nscale and a major hardware supplier to data centers. Such support could ease access to capital while exposing a hardware vendor more directly to customers’ construction and repayment progress.
The reports distinguish two related but separate arrangements. Nscale signed a roughly $45 billion compute-rental agreement with Anthropic in August. A separate project involving about 460 megawatts could also be worth roughly $45 billion, but remains under discussion. The second figure should not be treated as a signed contract, and the two amounts should not be added up as realized revenue.
The next disclosure must define the guarantee
For outside observers, the question is not only how many GPUs a facility might hold. If a guarantee is signed, its duration, cap, lender beneficiaries, triggers and any phased coverage would show whether Nvidia is backing a bounded project or providing a broader financing backstop.
A reasonable reading is that AI infrastructure competition is binding commercial and financial relationships more tightly. The current reporting does not establish that the project cannot repay its debt, or that Nvidia has already taken a loss. The risk becomes clearer only when financing terms, construction milestones and customer purchases can be checked against one another.
