Overview

By Friday afternoon, Taiwan’s Central Emergency Operations Center had counted 163 injuries. AP cited 350 by Friday night; a Reuters report, citing the fire department, put the toll at 527 on Saturday morning. The death toll remained at one in the Saturday reports, but the injury figures do not share a single cutoff.

The 350 and 527 figures use different cutoffs

Focus Taiwan cited the Central Emergency Operations Center’s count of 163 injuries as of 1:30 p.m. Friday. AP’s Saturday report put the center’s Friday-night total at 350, while a later Reuters report cited the fire department’s figure of 527. The reports show the tally rising over time, but the latter two also come from different agencies.

The safest reading is that injury reports were still being compiled, not that the 350 and 527 figures automatically contradict each other. The stories do not provide a shared hourly table or explain whether the agencies used identical counting rules, so the 177-person gap cannot be reconciled from these reports alone.

Outages and restored service need separate clocks

AP, citing a local newspaper’s account of power-authority figures, reported that Champi affected about 280,000 households and that roughly 80% had power back by Saturday morning. Reuters cited Taipower as saying more than 288,000 homes had lost electricity and that most had been reconnected. Both reports show repairs underway, but they do not share a common measurement time.

Local recovery data matters after the center moves on

Champi did not make a direct landfall in Taiwan, yet its broad circulation affected much of the island. In its Saturday-morning report, AP relayed the weather agency’s expectation that land warnings would be lifted by evening. That was a forecast at publication time, not confirmation that roads, power lines, and affected households had returned to normal. The next useful update is a local count of remaining outages and transport recovery.
