Overview
This month, WFP’s monthly food assistance in Gaza fell from 1.6 million people to 1.1 million. The agency says half a million will lose that support, while families who remain in the program will receive half as much food in their ration.
Coverage and portions are shrinking together
In its October 19 statement, WFP said it had reduced family food parcels from two to one and made the wheat-flour bag smaller. Daily hot meals have fallen from 250,000 to 150,000, and cash support has been reduced for 75,000 families. The figures show cuts across coverage, food quantities and cash assistance at once.
That does not mean every aid service in Gaza has stopped. WFP says it is still supporting bakeries that cover one-third of Gaza’s bread needs, nutrition assistance for 300,000 women and children, and healthy snacks for 200,000 schoolchildren. Saying that half a million people have lost all assistance would go beyond what the statement says.
The $450 million appeal is not money in hand
WFP is seeking $450 million to maintain critical operations in Gaza and the West Bank from October 2026 through March 2027. The agency also says its Palestine operation received less than half as much funding in 2026 as in previous years. This is a six-month funding request, not confirmation that the money has arrived.
The useful measures to watch are pledges and delivery separately: whether funds arrive, whether coverage expands again, and whether the number of hot meals rises. WFP has not given a timetable for those changes, so the appeal alone cannot tell families when they might regain their previous support.
Food insecurity has eased, but emergency need remains
WFP estimates that 1.4 million people in Gaza, about 67 percent of the population, face acute food insecurity at crisis level or worse. Around 200,000 remain in Emergency conditions, where immediate food assistance is needed to prevent deaths from hunger. The estimate is down from 1.6 million people, or 77 percent, at the end of 2025; WFP describes the improvement as fragile.
The statement confirms the scale of aid and the agency’s estimates, but it does not measure how household food consumption will change after the cuts. The reduction in coverage is established; whether food insecurity rises again needs later data.
