Overview

Farmers and harvest companions in Abu Falah were attacked by masked settlers on Friday; the violence also included burning vehicles and olive trees. The Associated Press said at least eight villages in the northern West Bank were affected. The Guardian reported that Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine was injured and hospitalized in Abu Falah.

A seasonal income window is being squeezed

The Associated Press and The Guardian reported attacks in at least eight villages in the northern West Bank on Friday. Farmers and companions in Abu Falah were attacked as they set out to harvest; settlers also burned vehicles and olive trees in other villages.

AP cited a Palestinian Farmers’ Union representative who estimated that about 110,000 families depend on privately owned olive groves for income, with tens of thousands of seasonal workers involved in the harvest. Because the attacks came during a limited harvest window, the question is not only which trees were burned. It is whether farmers can safely return to their groves and finish picking. The reports do not calculate this week’s crop or income losses.

Harvest access depends on permission as well as safety

The Guardian also reported new Israeli military restrictions this year: Palestinians need military approval to enter relevant agricultural land in Area C of the West Bank. The paper put the restricted area at about 8,800 hectares, 30% more than a year earlier. That rule does not establish that every farmer was turned away, but it adds a condition to reaching the groves.

Permits and physical attacks are different barriers. For a farmer, both affect the same practical question: can they reach their trees during the harvest? Treating either one as the whole explanation would miss part of the constraint.

Injury totals need their geographic scope

AP reported that the Palestine Red Crescent Society treated 14 people at six locations, while local officials reported at least four injuries in two additional villages. The Guardian, citing Palestinian authorities, reported at least 20 people injured across eight villages. The reports do not align fully on location or recording time, so the available material cannot explain the difference with certainty.

AP said the Israeli military condemned the violence and acknowledged that a journalist had been injured. Whether farmers can safely return during the remaining harvest period is still unresolved; no verified total for this week’s crop or income losses is available.
