Overview
Brazil’s presidential runoff is five days away. Meta told the Superior Electoral Court on Oct. 20 that automated restrictions on official campaign ads would receive human review within two hours; it also said Meta AI would apply the same refusal rule to both candidates’ names.
The two-hour clock applies to campaign ads
In its response to Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court, Meta said an automated restriction or suspension on an official campaign account’s ads would receive human review within two hours. AP also reported Meta’s position that the court-ordered restrictions do not apply to organic posts.
The deadline answers how quickly an ad restriction should be reviewed. Reach across recommendations and search requires a different set of evidence.
Meta AI now rejects both candidates’ names
Agência Brasil reported that, responding to complaints about different results for image requests involving the two candidates, Meta said it had added measures so Meta AI would also reject prompts containing the other candidate’s first name. Under the company’s account, both names now trigger a refusal.
That is a symmetric filter, and users on both sides still receive a refusal. Consistent rules may reduce one-sided treatment; they do not by themselves show that both campaigns receive equal service.
The filing contains no comparative reach data
Agência Brasil noted that Meta’s response did not address reach figures. The company pointed to the judge’s distinction between equal rules and criteria, on one hand, and identical outcomes, on the other. That marks the boundary between the platform’s account of its process and evidence outsiders can check.
At the time of AP’s report, the electoral court had confirmed receipt of Meta’s response, while a meeting with Meta and both campaign teams was still expected later that day. What is confirmed so far is a description of the process. Whether human reviews meet the deadline and whether comparable content receives comparable reach still require records.
