Overview
North Korea says it tested the Zam-2.0 torpedo on October 15 and that AI handles target detection and guidance. Two days later, reports also mentioned more than 180 related tests over five years, but the context was propulsion work, not a record of verified AI performance.
The announcement names two functions and little else
KCNA's description places AI in target detection and guidance. The Associated Press reports that KCNA did not explain what 'artificial intelligence' meant in this system; Yonhap says Pyongyang disclosed no further details about the weapon.
What can be confirmed is that North Korea made the claim and said the Zam-2.0 was tested on Oct. 15. Public reporting offers no sensor description, target set, decision trace, test conditions, or hit data. AP reported that South Korea's military had not immediately commented.
The 180-test figure belongs to propulsion
North Korea said more than 180 related tests had taken place over five years. AP and Yonhap connect that number to propulsion systems and rocket-propulsion devices; it is not evidence that AI target detection or guidance completed 180 trials.
Yonhap cites experts who speculate that the 'super-speed' and rocket-propulsion language may point to supercavitation, while noting the control challenges of very fast underwater operation. That is a hypothesis about propulsion, not an independently measured speed, range, or guidance result.
The missing details set the limit on the claim
Target detection and guidance do not establish that a system can independently select and attack a target. The public material does not say where a human sets the target, confirms a decision, or can stop a mission, and it provides no error-rate or jamming-resistance data.
The careful reading is that Pyongyang has added an AI capability claim to its naval weapons messaging. Without target data, test conditions, and independent observation, the reports cannot establish whether the AI works as claimed, how autonomous the system is, or whether it is operational.
