Overview

ChatGPT is beginning to turn answers into small interfaces people can operate, rather than presenting information only as paragraphs, lists, or static charts. This looks like a visual change, but it raises a deeper question: when people can click, drag, and change parameters, the assumptions behind a result should become visible too.

Answers are becoming tools, not just text

On October 7, OpenAI announced the start of a staged rollout of GPT-6 with “Intelligent UI” in ChatGPT. Responses can combine text with charts, buttons, forms, and interactive components. Paid plans receive the feature first, with Free and Go expected to follow the next day; the models in Work and Codex are unchanged by this update.

Alongside the launch demonstration, journalists tried a clickable anatomy diagram, a cost-of-living calculator with sliders, and an airplane-seat map with selectable details. The examples point to a shift from answers people only read to answers they can also operate.

More useful does not automatically mean easier to verify

An interactive calculator can expose its input variables without showing the formula, data source, or limits behind them. Clear visuals may make assumptions easier to spot, but they can also make an unchecked result feel especially authoritative. That is a risk worth watching, not evidence that the new feature has already produced an error.

Make the path behind each number visible

In everyday website maintenance, forms and calculators need clear inputs, defaults, units, and reset options. A dynamically generated interface should likewise help people see what a result depends on, what they can change, and how to return to plain text when the system is uncertain.

Generating an interface is also a product responsibility

My view is that when an interface shifts from fixed pages to one generated for each question, design responsibility does not disappear. It moves from “where should the button go?” to “when should the system make a button, what will it do, and how can a mistake be undone?” Accessibility, data boundaries, and recovery from errors belong in the evaluation, not just whether an answer looks better.

Real-world use still has questions to answer

The feature is still rolling out in stages. Its consistency across tasks, accessibility on small screens and with screen readers, and the model’s ability to know when not to generate a complex component all need to be observed. Text may remain the best answer; interactivity should not become decoration by default.
